The Observational Stage at GyRa

The 5th and 6th grades at the Gymnasium are collectively referred to in Hamburg as the Observational Stage. The aim is for children from different primary schools to be prepared together for work at the Gymnasium (middle and upper levels). These two years are closely accompanied by the class teacher and the subject faculties. Exchange with the parents is very important to us. Below we have compiled for you what the observational stage at Gymnasium Rahlstedt entails and what is important to us:

A large group of people stands on the beach, most with arms raised, smiling at the camera. The scene is brightly lit, probably at sunset. In the background you can see sand and the sea.

Subjects

At Gymnasium Rahlstedt, the core subjects (German, English, Mathematics and, in Class 6, the second foreign language) are initially taught five hours per week to ensure that children acquire strong and well-founded subject-, method- and social skills. The other subjects are taught for two hours each. Since children at this age have a strong urge to move, Physical Education is taught for three hours.

To strengthen children from the outset in peaceful and cooperative interaction, there is a weekly Class Hour in which, in addition to the class council, social learning is also emphasized.

The fifth grades have six teaching periods every day and once a week two hours of theater in the afternoon. The sixth grades have, in the afternoon, one seventh period – otherwise, also six teaching periods daily. Lessons are usually given in double periods, so that, among other things, quietness in the learning process is achieved.

The Timetable for Class 5 could look like this, for example:

Weekly timetable with subjects for Monday to Friday. The periods range from 8:00 to 15:15. Monday: Geography, Sports, Religion. Tuesday: Math, English, German. Wednesday: Class Hour, Math, Science & Technology. Thursday: English, Art, Music. Friday: Sports, German, Math.

The GyRa Planner

All fifth-grade students receive our GyRa Planner free of charge (many thanks to our Förderverein “Friendship Circle” for sponsoring). The GyRa Planner includes on its 160 pages the following elements:

A weekly calendar with the days of the week from Monday to Sunday. Monday and Tuesday are planned for tasks and activities. Wednesday is also marked with tasks. Thursday is as The image shows several documents laid out on a table. The pages are structured and contain tables as well as text fields. At the top of the image stands the word Three documents on a table used for planning, goals, and achievements. The documents contain various layouts with fields for notes and information. At the top there is Image shows several information sheets. One shows a schematic representation of human organs. Another contains a table with various religious symbols and their names. The background is in a simple layout to highlight the content.

In the central Homework Calendar students not only note their homework but also all information that is important for you as parents.

Also dedicated to communication between you and us (i.e., the class teacher and the subject teachers) is an extensive form area. Here you can, for example, conveniently issue a sickness excuse for your child. Subject teachers have the option, should it ever be necessary, to note violations such as forgotten homework or disruptions to lessons, which must then be counter-signed by you. Of course you will also find all contact details in the GyRa Planner, should you need to discuss a specific topic directly. The GyRa Planner is thus an important communication medium for us and you. In this way you receive all information you need as parents and closely monitor your daughter’s or son’s performance.

On some pages there are goals and what has been achieved by your daughter or son. The students thus always have their personal learning goals in view and appreciate praise from class or subject teachers for special achievements. This is also recorded in the GyRa Planner. This part is, of course, also of interest to you as parents.

In the back part, students find subject knowledge on many topics they encounter in the observational stage. Thus the GyRa Planner also serves as a teaching medium. In addition you will find in the GyRa Planner all important information about Gymnasium Rahlstedt (phone numbers, contact persons, room plans, etc.).

Social Learning

Already in our guiding principle “Educating people” lies the claim of comprehensive, holistic education at Gymnasium Rahlstedt. Beyond imparting skills and knowledge, the child as a person and in their actions is central to our approach. Strengthening individuality and group belonging are key building blocks in learning. Social learning at GyRa is highly valued, because when the individual feels comfortable and satisfied, they can contribute creatively and productively to the group. These abilities are also needed in other groups (e.g., family, sports club, etc.) and not least in a functioning society.

Social learning takes place both in subject lessons and in the class hour as well as in extracurricular projects. Here are some examples:

  • German class starts in Class 5 with the topic: My new school and me.
  • Also in English class, the new situation is addressed with the chapters: Welcome and New school – new friends.
  • In physical education, children are encouraged to cooperate with team-building games.
  • The Class Hour brings together many impulses for social learning. Among other things, the Class Council regularly takes place here.
