Middle School at GyRa

The middle school (grades 8-10) is for the students a phase of transition between childhood and adulthood. In this sensitive period, important steps in personality development are taken and here a substantial part of skill acquisition takes place. In this respect, here we lay the groundwork for the future prospects of the students.

The GyRa takes into account this tension between increasing academic demands and the challenges of adolescence and wants to prepare all students for the upper level or training and career:

  • We ensure reliable and trusting supervision by class-, subject- and guidance teachers.
  • We offer methodically varied teaching that keeps all students in view.
  • We offer in the elective area a diverse range to create orientation and to discover and expand own interests and strengths.
  • We offer numerous support and advancement courses and can thus specifically support less successful students and further challenge high-achieving students with their special talents.
  • We strengthen the self-competence of the students, because this is a key for successfully managing this and future life phases. We try to recognize and develop existing strengths, build self-confidence, activate initiative, increase resilience, train the ability to accept criticism, demand self-discipline, increase reflective ability and promote motivation and determination.
  • We encourage the students to take on responsibility within the school community. The youths act as mentors for the children of the lower grades, they help as school paramedics in emergencies, support as a technology team school events and advocate for the school and the environment as climate scouts.
  • We work trustfully with the parents to accompany and support the exciting life phase of the youths together.
  • We invest a lot of time and energy in forming a good class community and in social learning. In class hours, on project days and on class trips we promote cohesion in the community.
  • We carefully reassemble the classes in year 7 to create good prerequisites for joyful and effective learning at GyRa.
  • We offer our students numerous modules of career orientation (work placement, social internship, goal-oriented seminar).
