Our mission: Educating people
“Educating people”: This is a formula in which many facets of the school mission at Gymnasium Rahlstedt reflect themselves:
Our image of humanity is not shaped by a single idea, but embraces the diversity of our city and the district of Rahlstedt, where almost 90,000 people now live. It is defined by the goals of humanity, cultural interest, social engagement and colorfulness.
We want our students to be able to find their own path on this basis. We are a school that deliberately refrains from predefined focus areas early on and instead aims to give young people, over eight years, the most diverse possibilities to seek their individual priorities themselves (sometimes via detours), to develop priorities and steadily consolidate them.
An important part of our work in the observational stage therefore initially consists in the consolidation of core competencies in German, English, Mathematics and (from grade 6) the second foreign language. In this early phase of learning development we consciously refrain from profiling through additional lessons in other subjects. This only takes place in the middle school.
We want “Educating people” to educate, but also “People to educate”, we want to help them acquire challenging key qualifications, we want to support them in developing their own, distinctive identity and a healthy self-confidence built on that, but also assist in seeing in Education more than just instrumental skills:
The truly Human does not primarily anchor itself in the Zeitgeist and in quickly- and short-lived utilitarian interests, but sees the whole person and, despite expertise, demands education according to holistic principles.
And we also want to be a collegium in which People educate our students educate. Our teachers want the students to meet them on equal terms and to feel that our school is a space where people can meet each other humanely, with care and empathy.
Florian Frankenfeld, since 1.2.2017 principal at Gymnasium Rahlstedt
