Which religion do you teach there? The answer for Hamburg and thus also for GyRa is quite clear: none. For in Hamburg's religious education for all, students of all religions and worldviews learn together. All perspectives and religions are included in our religious education and stand side by side with equal value.

We talk about fundamental questions of life, for example: What carries us in life? What makes us afraid? What is good and what must be called evil? What can we do for justice? Where do we come from? Where do we go?

Behind this is always the question of how we want to live together in this world. In religious education, we consider what answers the different religions have to these questions, think together about current personal questions, and together discover the diversity of religions and worldviews. Students learn to share their own convictions and religious views with others and to appreciate religious diversity in our society. Those who do not belong to any religion are also encouraged to contribute their viewpoints.

At the center is dialogue, a shared coexistence, tolerance and openness. Together with the students, we wrestle with answers to sensitive and difficult questions, including those from life’s boundary situations such as guilt and forgiveness, happiness and suffering, illness and death. Here, current and concrete life references are always in focus.

In religious education we discover that from religious traditions one can gain courage and strength to act and live, that norms and values shape our society, and that the answers and positions one has gained can help guide the development of one's own stance.

The subject of Religion is taught in class 5 and 6 in a class-group setting. The content focuses on the five world religions with their festivals, traditions and houses of worship, on living together, as well as the topic of creation and the question of God and the divine.

From class 8 to class 10, Religion is taught as an elective subject. In class 8, beliefs and freedoms in the individual religions, the question of the (digital) self and responsibility for creation are central.
In class 9 we discuss identity and the question of happiness and misfortune as well as the sources and central figures of the religions.
Class 10 is characterized by questions about who God or the divine actually is and whether there is a God at all. In addition, the topics of misconduct and utopias as well as the question of an afterlife are covered and discussed interreligiously.

The upper level deals with the following four modules, with special emphasis placed on the particular Abitur focus determined each year.

  • Truth
  • Anthropology
  • God and the Divine
  • Ethics
