All students of the gymnasial upper level upon entering the study phase — that is, the two final school years — have been taught in Hamburg in the "Profiloberstufe" since the 2009/10 school year. This organizational form thus replaced the Reformierte Oberstufe. Key characteristics of this valid form are:

Main subjects

All students are mandatorily taught in three four-hour core subjects: German, advanced foreign language, Mathematics.

Profile area

All students choose for the entire two years a profile area from the offerings of the school or the cooperating schools. Within the profile they are taught together in three subjects as well as the seminar subject. At least one of the subjects is profile-defining, i.e. it is typically taught four hours at an advanced level. In total a profile comprises 12 to 14 weekly hours.

Elective area
All students select additional subjects from the compulsory elective or elective area so that all study requirements are met.

Qualification level

Two of the three core subjects are taught at an elevated level by choice, of which at least one is a written Abitur examination subject. The task setting is centrally determined by the authority.
A second core subject (at elevated or fundamental level) is a written or oral examination subject.

The profile area comprises at least three subjects, with the profile-defining subject also being an Abitur examination subject.

All students have 34 weekly hours of instruction, with 12 hours in the core subjects and 10–14 weekly hours in the profile area.

In addition to the three written Abitur examinations there is an oral Abitur examination as a classic subject examination or as a presentation examination.

From the 2022/23 school year, seven profiles — which will be continuously developed — will be offered at the Gymnasium Rahlstedt:
