At GyRa you can choose French as a second foreign language from grade 6. We work with the instructional material Découvertes by Klett. In the first year, we study the new foreign language five hours per week; in grade 7 French becomes a four-hour course and from grade 8 only a three-hour course. The subject can be chosen at the upper secondary level at a foundational level with two hours; however, the final exams are not mandatory.
Anyone who chose Latin as a second foreign language could take French in the elective area as a third foreign language from grade 8. Whether a course will run depends on the number of registrations. Also choosing French as a third foreign language would allow participation in an upper secondary course.
These are the special features we have at GyRa:
- For French there is a wide variety of competitions that are integrated into ongoing classes – depending on the interests or performance level of the class, e.g. The Internet Team Competition, Francomics, or The Federal Language Competition. This provides motivation!
- In our afternoon DELF-AG “Club français”, you will be prepared for the internationally recognized language diploma, the Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française, or become familiar with the exam formats. Primarily French is spoken here, and the material learned in class is quietly deepened in a small, friendly circle – all without grammar drills.
- In grade 10, i.e., in the (usually) last year of French, there is the option to obtain the DELF intégré at level B1 alongside instruction. This is valid for life and can be a strong plus for future employers in applications later on!
- In grades 8-9 you can sign up for our Student Exchange. Our partner school is Collège Sophie Germain in Aix-en-Provence. For one week we trade Hamburg rain for sunshine in southern France!
Regardless, there is always the option to integrate a stay abroad or a longer exchange into the school career. Through the Deutsch-Französisches Jugendwerk or the school authority there are various offerings that enable an individual exchange (Brigitte-Sauzay program, Voltaire program, …). We regularly inform interested students about these!
