We (finally!!) did it again – Profile Internationality went Model United Nations of Hamburg

After one year without any MUN conferences due to COVID-19, it was finally time again: Profile Internationality of Gymnasium Rahlstedt was going Model United Nations of Hamburg at Gymnasium Meiendorf!

This year’s conference was only possible through a very strict hygiene concept, which required all of the students’ discipline. This made it possible for some schools from Germany and even two Danish schools to attend MUNoH! The GyRa delegation was the biggest with 36 persons altogether: 33 delegates, one chairwoman in Mona Grimm and our two MUN directors (the teachers). This time, we again represented some highly interesting delegations, for example France, Russia, the United Kingdom, but also smaller but nonetheless interesting delegations like Chad or Somalia. The conference was opened festively on Wednesday with our headmaster Mr. Frankenfeld in the audience. From Thursday to Sunday, our GyRa delegates had to work hard to join together and discuss current issues of global importance and – just like real United Nations delegates – come up with their own effective solutions. Some of the hottest topics being discussed were:

  • The situation of Uighurs in China
  • Finding measures to ensure the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals during the Covid-19 pandemic
  • Finding answers to Africa’s water problem with focus on water security, distribution and access

But is MUN only hard work? NO! It is also meeting new people, socializing and making friends. On Thursday, for example, each committee had an evening together where they had some good food and chat to get to know each other better – some even formed new friendships. And on Friday, there was a film evening for the delegates – of course without suits, normal street clothes are allowed here 😉

After five days of debating in English, finding solutions to the world’s most pressing problems and getting to know many new faces, the closing ceremony on Sunday meant the end of MUNoH 2021. The GyRa delegates went home exhausted, but happy about what they had accomplished. The same goes for the teachers Mrs. Luteijn and Mr. Köhler, who were very proud about the way their students had worked concentrated and diligently: They have represented Gymnasium Rahlstedt very well, including our very active 15 first-timers! We also had five (!) GyRa award winners for best or most-distinguished delegates in their forum: Justine Quansah (S3, United Kingdom), Omied Mohseni (S3, Russia), Oscar Vorderwülbecke (S1, Somalia), Tuba Omied (S1, Chad) and Jule Greven (S1, Ireland).

A big THANK YOU goes to the organizing pupils and teachers at our neighboring school Gymnasium Meiendorf, who have again done an outstanding job of welcoming the MUN community in Hamburg for the thirteenth time now.

Hamburg, we did it again in 2021 – and we hope to see you in 2022!
