Respectful to argue with one another, listen to each other, and present an opinion persuasively, that is what students of the 9th classes demonstrated on 28 January 2025 and showed that these democratic values are highly valued at GyRa.
In the semi-final, eight very well-prepared class winners competed on the question “Should homework be abolished at Gymnasium Rahlstedt?”. The audience from the participating classes attentively followed the engaging exchange of opinions, after they had debated themselves many times in German class over the past weeks.
The juries, consisting of six students from the 10th and 11th grades as well as two female teachers, deliberated after the debates taking into account the criteria subject knowledge, ability to converse, persuasiveness, and expressiveness and did not make their decisions lightly. The school finalists were Yasminka Alahmad (9e), Janina Evers (9e), Emma Jozic (9e) and Fiona Korth (9c). They delivered a eloquent, multifaceted exchange on the question of whether voting rights should be extended to 16-year-olds in Bundestag elections.
Finally the jury crowned Yasminka Alahmad and Fiona Korth as school winners! They will represent Gymnasium Rahlstedt at the Jugend debattiert network final on 17 February 2025.
Congratulations to the two of them!
