Excursion of class 6f to the vacuum laboratory at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld as part of the nature and technology lessons at Gymnasium Rahlstedt. Two students report:

Dear students, dear parents and visitors of our homepage,

the trip to DESY on 08.10.2025 was very exciting. Although we had a long journey by subway, S-Bahn, bus and regional train, it was worth it.

In the vacuum laboratory there were large vacuum pumps, with which we conducted many different experiments. In the beginning they talked only about research and experimental physics; later it was first about the vacuum. We worked in small groups with four students each on the topic of vacuum. The most interesting experiments for us were the balloon experiment and the Magdeburg hemispheres. We had a lot of fun finding out what happens when you place different substances in the vacuum and examine them.

There was also a cool lunch break where you could play. After lunch they spoke about vacuum in daily life. At the end there was a final experiment. It was very exciting and tasty. We won’t reveal more about it…

We wish you lots of fun at DESY!
