Hello and welcome to the Spanish course!

Hands up!, Let’s go to the beach! or Merry Christmas!, that all sounds pretty Spanish to you? Right, so it’s high time to learn more about this language…

Did you know that about 389 million people worldwide speak Spanish as a native or second language, placing it fourth among the most spoken languages in the world? A good reason to start learning it now — in year 8 — in class. So later, when you travel to distant countries, you can really apply what you learned at school…

And trust us: You can already speak much more Spanish than you think:

The image shows a colorful background graphic in red and yellow reminiscent of the Spanish flag. Various Spanish words and phrases are scattered in black text, including 'Playa', 'Fiesta', 'Hola!', 'Tapas', 'Amigos', 'Uno, Dos, Tres', 'Vamos', 'Señora', 'Tortilla', '¿Cómo estás?' and '¡Perdón!'.

Despacitosuavesuavecito…now but first slowly:

We, Mrs. Fründt, Mrs. Thonfeld and Mrs. Rösch, bring the Spanish language closer to you at GyRa. It is important to us that in class from the very beginning much is spoken and tested in (small) role plays how to find oneself abroad. In addition, we want to convey many cultural peculiarities of Spain and Latin America, so that you know, for example, that in Argentina you may arrive an hour late for an appointment or should avoid ordering a cola in Spain.

With many (listening) texts, songs, or videos we bring you closer to the language and invite you to expand your own knowledge. You can often be creative, for example by drafting dialogues, poems, letters, or blog posts. Our textbook “Vamos adelante, curso intensivo” is specifically tailored for acquiring Spanish as a third foreign language and is equipped with modern, motivational speaking prompts. Of course, it should not be overlooked that you regularly have to learn vocabulary and grammar, because it simply won’t work without it. If this already seems difficult in your other languages, Spanish could be a challenge for you. Also, when you choose Spanish, you have one more class per week than students in the other WPIII courses. On the other hand, at the end of year 10, since you will have attended the Spanish course at least until then, you may speak one more foreign language. And not only that, if you want, you could even have a trip…

Let’s go on a trip!

In year 9 we take a course trip to Spain to get to know the country and culture, but also to test and improve our language skills. The destination can vary, depending on the given circumstances and the interests of the course. But who knows, after that you might not know the impressive Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, the Bernabéu stadium of Real Madrid, or the palaces of the Alhambra in Granada from the inside…

Trip to Barcelona / Catalonia

Poquito a poquito

We therefore invite you to learn Spanish in class step by step – poquito a poquito – and we are already looking forward to you!

Hasta pronto!
